TL;DR: A cracked Bertazzoni induction cooktop glass is unsafe to use: stop cooking and switch the breaker off from a dry floor. An owner cannot repair it; a technician decides whether the glass or the whole cooktop is replaced.

For a Bertazzoni induction cooktop cracked glass repair or replace decision, the first step is the same either way: stop using the cooktop and switch off its breaker, because liquid can reach the electronics under a cracked surface. A crack in the glass cannot be mended by an owner, and tape, glue or sealant are not safe fixes. Whether the glass top can be replaced on its own or the cooktop has to be replaced depends on the model and on what a technician finds underneath, so the answer comes after an inspection, not before it.

First actionStop cooking; switch the cooktop’s breaker off from a dry floor
Hairline crack or deep crackTreat both as unsafe to use; the surface is no longer sealed
Spill into the crackDo not turn the power back on; a technician must check below the glass
Repair by ownerNot possible; no tape, glue or sealant
Replace glass or replace cooktopDecided by the model, the damage underneath and the parts position

Is it safe to use an induction cooktop with cracked glass?

No. The glass surface is more than decoration. It keeps spills, steam and grease away from the power electronics and the coils underneath it. Once it is cracked, liquid can run through the crack to parts that carry mains power. A cracked cooktop can also shed small pieces, and a pan can catch on the break. Even a fine hairline crack should be treated the same way as a deep one, because you cannot tell from the surface how far it runs or whether it is open underneath.

If you see a crack, switch the cooktop off at the controls, then switch off its breaker at the electrical panel while standing on a dry floor. Do not wipe the area with a wet cloth. If water or a spill has already reached the crack and you see sparks, smell burning or the breaker keeps tripping, leave the breaker off and call a technician.

What causes induction glass to crack?

The usual causes are impact, for example a heavy pot dropped on the surface or a hard knock on the edge, and thermal shock, such as a very hot pan meeting a cold wet surface. A cooktop that was installed badly can also develop cracks if the cabinet cutout is out of true or the edges are under pressure. Heavy cast iron or an uneven pan that slides on the glass can chip it. Our cooktop installation checks guide explains why a level, supported installation matters.

If the crack appeared without any knock or spill, tell the technician what you were cooking and how the zones were set when you noticed it. That history matters for deciding whether the cause is the use, the installation or the cooktop itself. Do not clean the glass with harsh scrapers on a cracked surface; for routine care, see our cooktop cleaning and maintenance guide.

Can cracked induction glass be repaired?

Not by an owner, and not with a surface repair. Glue, tape or a clear sealant will not make the surface safe or watertight, and heat will break it down. The question for a technician is whether the glass top can be replaced as a separate part and, if so, whether the parts for your model are available. On some cooktops the glass is a separate replaceable part; on others it is joined to the frame in a way that makes the whole unit the part. We do not know which applies to your model without the model number, so write it down from the rating label and give it to the technician. Our PE304INDXV and the other cooktop model pages list the series and type but not the parts structure.

Whether it is worth repairing depends on more than the glass. If liquid has reached the electronics or a coil, the repair grows. Our guide to the cooktop repair or replace decision sets out how a technician weighs the age of the cooktop, the extent of the damage and the cost of the parts against a new unit.

When does replacing the cooktop make more sense?

Replacing the whole cooktop is usually the better route when the glass is not available as a separate part, when liquid has damaged the electronics, when the cooktop already had other faults or when it is old enough that the repair would put money into a unit that is near the end of its life. Replacing only the glass tends to make sense when the damage is limited to the glass, the electronics are dry and sound and the part can be obtained. We cannot give you a cost, and we will not guess one: the price of a glass top or a new cooktop varies with the model and the technician’s findings, and an upfront quote after inspection is the only reliable figure.

Weigh also whether the cutout and the electrical connection suit a new cooktop. If you replace with a different model, the size and the supply have to match the existing opening and circuit, as the installation instructions describe. A cooktop connected incorrectly can show an error such as the one in our guide on the cooktop U400 power connection. Do not change wiring yourself.

What should you tell the technician?

Take clear photos of the crack from above and from a low angle, without touching it, plus the rating label with the model number. Note when it happened, what was on the cooktop and whether any liquid went in. Say whether any zone still lights, whether you saw sparks or smelled burning and whether the breaker has tripped. Keep the breaker off until the visit. Our cooktop questions to ask before scheduling repair guide lists more of what helps.

Do not lift the cooktop out of the counter or open its underside. The parts there are connected to mains power and are a technician’s work. Our Bertazzoni cooktop repair page explains how a visit works.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep using my Bertazzoni induction cooktop with a small crack?
No. Stop using it and switch the breaker off from a dry floor. Even a small crack can let liquid reach the electronics.
Can a cracked induction cooktop glass be repaired with glue or tape?
No. Those are not safe or watertight, and heat will break them down. The glass has to be replaced by a technician if a replacement is available.
Is it cheaper to replace the glass or the whole cooktop?
It depends on the model and on what is damaged underneath. That depends on the model and on what is damaged underneath; only an inspection and an upfront quote can tell you.
What if liquid got into the crack?
Leave the breaker off and do not switch the cooktop on. A technician has to check below the glass before it is used again.
Who should I call about a cracked cooktop?
A technician. You can book a visit online and send photos of the crack and the rating label.
