If a Bertazzoni dishwasher won’t start, look at the display first, because the machine usually tells you which stage it gave up at. On the DW24PR control sheet covered on our site, a stuck or wet key shows as E9, a lost link between the panel and the board shows as Ed, and a fill that never arrived shows as E1. If the panel shows nothing and the buttons do not react, check the door latch, the supply and the breaker before you book a visit. Do not take off the base panel or the door lock assembly.
Is the door closing and latching?
A dishwasher will not begin a cycle if it does not register the door as closed. Close the door firmly and make sure nothing sticks out of the upper rack or the top edge to hold it off its seal. Our Bertazzoni dishwasher door will not latch page lists the causes it knows, including a door latch or float switch failure, and rates the repair as one that requires a technician. If the door catches only when you lean on it or does not catch at all, stop there and book a visit.
Is something pressing the controls?
Our Bertazzoni dishwasher error codes guide explains that E9 means a button has been reading as pressed for more than thirty seconds. A wet finger, a film of grease over the touch keys, or a cabinet panel fixed too tightly against the top edge of the door can all do it. Wipe the fascia dry with a soft cloth and make sure nothing is resting against the controls. This is the likeliest reason for a dishwasher whose buttons seem dead.
The same guide describes Ed as the display panel and the main board no longer exchanging data. A single Ed after a power flicker often clears on a restart. An Ed that returns every cycle points at the connection between the door panel and the base, which flexes every time the door opens, and that is a technician’s job.

Does the dishwasher have power and water?
Check that the breaker is on, since a dishwasher with no power will show nothing. Then open the water stop under the sink fully. Our code guide says that E1 on a DW24PR comes from a fill that never arrived: the machine opens the inlet valve and waits to measure water arriving, and if four minutes pass with nothing measured it stops and shows E1 instead of heating an empty tub. The usual causes are upstream of the machine: a supply stop closed after other plumbing work, a kinked inlet hose behind the unit, or a silted inlet screen. Open the stop valve, look for a hose pinched against the cabinet rail and listen for the short hiss of the valve opening at the start of a cycle.
A restart can clear a one-time event. The guide says to cut the power at the breaker, not at the door, and wait about two minutes. Codes latched by a one-time event clear on restart, and a code that reappears at once is reporting a live condition. Write down the exact code and which stage the machine reached.
Which model do you have, and why does it matter?
The code sheet depends on the model. Our guide says E8 is a DW24XT entry while the other codes come from the DW24PR sheet, so read the model string on the tub edge behind the door, and photograph it. Our dishwasher rating plate guide shows where the plate is. If the machine stops mid-cycle and not at the start, see dishwasher cycle stops.
What if there is water on the floor or under the tub?
That is E4 territory: water has reached the shallow pan under the tub and lifted the float, and the machine may keep running its drain pump. Shut the supply stop and switch the breaker off while standing on a dry floor, then mop what you can reach before the cabinet floor swells. Do not tip the machine forward to drain the pan, because that pushes water into the base wiring. This is a service call.
What should you not try?
Do not open the base panel, the door lock assembly or any hose clamp under the machine. Those sit against mains wiring and the pressurized water line. Do not bypass a door switch or a float. Our dishwasher troubleshooting checklist and our cleaning and maintenance guide cover the habits that keep codes away.
When should you call a technician?
Call if the door will not latch, if Ed returns every cycle, if E1 appears with a good water supply, if E4 appears, or if the panel stays dead with the breaker on. Bring the full model number and the exact code, and the visit gets shorter. Our Bertazzoni dishwasher repair page explains what a visit covers.
